Nuts, Bolts and Screws for Kids

Help children understand common fasteners, washers, threads and simple virtual assemblies with the Fasteners Academy.

Which fastener is which?

A nail has a pointed shank and generally no threads. A screw has threads that help it engage with a compatible material or fitting. A bolt commonly joins parts with a matching nut or threaded hole. A washer helps distribute load or serves another specific fastening function.

What threads do

Most familiar right-hand threaded fasteners tighten when turned clockwise and loosen counterclockwise, viewed from the turning end. Not every threaded part follows that pattern. In the app, children can see a virtual nut travel along a bolt as they turn it.

Build with virtual parts

The Nuts, Bolts & Screws Academy includes recognition, tool choice, washer placement and assembly challenges. Virtual projects demonstrate the order of putting parts together without requiring children to use real sharp or powered tools.
