Learn to Measure for Kids
Discover how to read a ruler, identify inches and centimeters, work with fractions and measure virtual objects in ToolSmart Kids.
Start at zero
When reading an object on a ruler, check where the object starts and ends. If it begins at zero, the endpoint gives its length. If it begins at another mark, subtract the starting measurement from the ending measurement.
Whole marks before fractions
The Measuring Academy starts with whole inches and whole centimeters, then introduces halves, quarters and eighths of an inch. Short lessons and practice activities help children see how smaller tick marks divide each inch.
Read it and mark it
Some activities show an object and ask children to read the ruler. Others ask them to move a marker to a requested length. Both skills are important: interpreting a scale and locating a measurement.
